'This' being keeping up with a blog of any kind, Blargh, Cooking, or otherwise. For those of you who faithfully follow my other blog Food and Kittens, you know that I have been just as successful in keeping up with that as I have keeping up with this one. I started a post for The Blargh Spot back in December. It was to be my ranking/review of all 11 Star Trek films. I got to my number nine and gave up. It started out creative and then just got boring.
I was toying with the thought of doing a soundtracks blog or news feed of some kind, where I babble about the bajillion movie scores I seem to be accumulating, but then I realized I cannot talk intelligently about music (yet), so there is no point in that. I'm pretty sure anyone I could con into following it would be ready to stab me after the 147th time I made the statement 'this sound track is very effective at...'
So, in quick summary, I have very little free time, none of which I use effectively because I have fallen into the trap of worrying about how I will spend my free time/worrying about not using my free time to study/work/clean. The rest of the time I am either working (in a new position that I don't yet find challenging and is perpetuating my unending guilt over how much money I make), or addressing graduate school (which has just about caused me to lose every bit of my sanity).
With that, I leave whatever audience I have left with this: I will try to blog more, but it will probably fail, like it always does, because I never keep up with anything anymore. Hola!

It's been a while, again
Well, it has once again been several months since my last post. I plan on giving The Blargh Spot a little more lovin' over the summer, since it will be the first time since August I will actually have reliable free time. I've built up a few ideas for posts and am looking forward to sharing them.
As for recent events, I am still waiting on pins and needles on whether or not I have been accepted to the graduate school I applied for. All my application materials are in, now I get to wait. I find myself in a rather stressful twist of emotions on the issue of grad school. Half of me is stressed out hoping I get in, while the other half is stressed out about the idea of attempting to get a Master's degree in mechanical engineering. So pretty much no matter what happens from this point I'm going to be stressed out. Yay.
On another note, I started Weight Watchers with a friend at work. I have been trying to lose weight for a while now, with little to no success. I figured, why not? And surprisingly, it is working. I've lost at least 5 lbs since I started almost 2 weeks ago, which isn't bad. Getting a 2 mile run in about every other day doesn't hurt either. Maybe I will finally get rid of my freshman 15 *cough* 40 *cough*.
On the video game side of things, Michael and I each got a Nintendo 3DS. I am impressed with the various extras it has, such as a slightly bigger screen, Street Pass, and the promise of eventual net browsing and streaming (yes, Netflix on my 3DS). I am not, however, impressed with the 3D. I have turned it off on every game I've try to play with it. It's snazzy, but you have to hold it in exactly the right position in front of your face, otherwise everything gets, well, interesting. And this could just be an issue unique to me, but the 3D gives me a headache after a while. I'm not displeased with getting 3DSs, especially since through trading in games/consoles and grabbing a used one we didn't pay anywhere near full price for either of them.
That's about all the new news I have for now. Like I said, I have some neat ideas for posts lined up that I will work on putting up soon. Until then, live long and prosper.

Now for Something Completely Different
I came across my old sketch pad the other day, and was entertained when I saw some of my old drawings from 2004. I thought I would share them here for your amusement. Just as a disclaimer, none of this is original art (that is, I copied all of these from an actual picture) because I'm just not that talented.

This is the cover of the HarperCollins Publishers version of The Magician's Nephew, Book 1 (or 6, depending on what chronology you follow) of the Chronicles of Narnia.

This is the cover of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Book 2/1), same publisher.

I copied this from the book How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci. Flowers. Woo.

This was a mail-order dinner plate. A mail-order dinner plate with a dragon on it.

This was off a flier for a talk about Harry Potter at Arkansas Governor's School '04. I found it on the ground, so I sat in the pecan pit at Hendrix College and drew it. I was such a dork...
Finding these has inspired me to try and start drawing again, so if I am actually successful in doing so, and the end result isn't repulsive, I will post it here for giggles. That's all for now!

Blogging Fail
Ok, so I neither kept up with my fancy cooking blog nor this blog. I've decided I don't want to maintain a cooking blog. Instead, if I cook something so fantastic I feel compelled to share it with the world, I will post about it here. Otherwise, I'm going to try and get back to blogging like I used to, because that was actually fun.
Why haven't I for the last 3 months? My life got completely consumed by the leadership program I joined at work. 40 hour/week job + 20-40 hours of homework/week = no free time for anything. At one point, I was literally spending over 2/3 of my day in a single building, the remaining ~1/3 spent at home, asleep. I've heard that this next 'semester' won't be so bad, so I hope to maintain a little more balance.
On other notes, I have been trying to catch up on hobbies that I have largely neglected since August during my Christmas break. I finally finished Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS), have nearly beaten Donkey Kong Country Returns (Nintendo Wii), got Rock Band 3 with the new keyboard peripheral (PS3), and tried Grand Turismo 5 for about a day (PS3). Oh, and of course, I've played lots and lots of WoW. I'll save my comments on WoW for another post.
As for all the other games, Donkey Kong Country Returns is an excellent addition to the series and a must-play for anyone who enjoyed the earlier games. The music and graphics are fantastic, and game play is challenging but engaging, and overall it is just a good game. Grand Turismo 5 can go fly a kite, Rock Band 3 is solid and the keyboard play is challenging and fun, and I look forward to finishing Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.
I'm going to try and keep posting to this blog more often, and not let work engulf every free moment of my life. We'll see how it goes. Hope everyone had a great holiday!

New Site Coming
So I bought myself a domain today. Once I get it and get Wordpress figured out, foodandkittens.com will go live. The inspiration for this site is my realizing I need a hobby. Today I realized that something I genuinely enjoy is cooking. So, at least once a week, I'm going to try cooking something new. I'll then take pretty pictures of it with our fancy new camera, and talk about it. This will give me something into which to channel some creative energy. Hopefully it turns out well.
I saw Lewis Black last night. The show was excellent of course. What I found almost as entertaining as LB himself, however, were the patrons. It is great to see people in a genuine state of shock/confusion/horror all at once. I am talking of course about the people who went to that concert without any clue what Lewis Black is like, and then realizing that he doesn't exactly fit their taste. They quickly went from happy to very very sad...

Vampires Suck, the Trailer
The last several 'spoof' movies to hit the big screen have been eye-rolling yawn fests at best, but this one actually looks entertaining. My opinion may be influenced by my overall dislike of the Twilight series, but I don't care. This looks funny as hell.
Also, if you want a nice helping of Twilight Saga movie bashing I highly recommend the Riff Trax for Twilight (I haven't listened to the ones for New Moon yet, but I hear they are hilarious). It goes to show that a good dose of Benny Hill can fix any movie.
